dress me up *} Persephone is as lovely as spring itself, for which she is goddess of. Her Liver Chestnut coat is as bright as snow and her deep blue eyes always seem to have that melancholy look. She is long and slightly lanky, but somehow manages to seem graceful all the time. Her delicate face is dished and carved beautifully, with tiny light green tendril markings creeping up around her eyes. Persephone is suspended in time, forever the image of a fresh three-year-old. But during the winter everything about her changes. The mare turns gaunt and skinny, and her coat turns to a Blood Bay color. The tendrils turn black, and so do her eyes, so Persephone fits the part of the Dark Queen perfectly. Even if she wishes it differently.
dress rehersal*} As you soon will know, she was isolated on a island for most of her life, so the goddess is innocent and maybe just a tad naive. She is also shy, not used to meeting other horses. But Persephone learns quickly and is very intelligent. She could never hurt a fly, so in fight or flight she would definitely choose flight. When winter comes, however, her bittersweet eyes turn mournful, and she barely talks or eats. Persephone loves almost everyone, but hates Hades with a passion. He keeps her chained so she cannot fly away, and teases her incessantly.
cut in half*} I think it would be good for me to play such a changing character because it would really help develop my writing. Sure it would be hard, but I feel up to the challenge. I also have some really good ideas for role-playing her!
start the show*} Persephone lived her whole childhood life in the arms of luxury. Having the Gods/Goddesses as your relatives sure makes it easy to grow up perfectly. When she was born, Persephone was whisked away to a tiny secluded island. This was not a terrible place, birds sang to her loveliness and the little animals scampered around her feet. But it was lonely. The filly would lie on the very edge of her garden island and wish on the stars that she could live Out there with the other horses. When she grew older, the filly began to think of escaping. Once she almost succeded, but Demeter caught wind and then suspended golden nets in a dome above Persephone. This is the only thing Gods cannot penetrate. But Persephone kept fighting. For many years she scratched the earth with her hooves, making a deep hole. When she finally broke through to the water, she lost her head in rejoicing. Jumping in, the filly almost drowned. Hades heard her cries deep in his hellhole. He was immediately hypnotized by her beautiful eyes and "saved" her. She survived in his lands for six months, eating nothing, saying nothing. Finally Zeus had enough. Persephone rejoiced in the news that she could leave. She talked and ate and her eyes grew brighter. You wOuld imagine that Hades would be angry as his beloved left, but he merely stood aside with a sly smile. Demeter saw this smile and grew nervous.
"Child, did you eat anything while you were there?"
Persephone indicated that yes, she had, and started stammering when her mother's face fell.
"But only six pomegranate seeds mamman! How could that be bad?"
Her answer came when Hades arrived the next year. With that sly smile he whisked the mare away. She was his now, for six full months of each year, and no one could do anything about it. While she was gone, Demeter mourned and left the Earth to fend for itself. Plants and animals died, and even the sun shone dimmer. Snow covered the Earth, and everything was cold and dead. But when her child returned, she rejoiced. Baby animals were born, little green shoots came out of the warming earth, and the sun shone bright again. This happens every year, and thus the seasons were born.
