The Sleipnir
Sleipni are a beautiful breed of horse; swift, smooth-gaited, graceful. How can this breed be all of these things, and possibly more? It has eight legs. No, not like a spider, where legs all protrude from the side of the body, but with an two extra leg on each side; one leg behind the foreleg and one to the inside of the hind leg, on each side.
-----
Sleipni all have eight long, muscular legs, without which they couldn't be the awesome breed they are now. The creature is a beauty, which can come in any and all shades and colours, and it is known among other things for its amazing speed and jumping power. Its hooves are large and hard, to provide extra footing and extra power. Their manes and tails are thick, and often seem to shine when the horses run. These horses do not need to fight; they much prefer, and are better at fleeing. But, when in a situation where fighting is vital, eight legs do a lot of damage.
The first Sleipni, whose name was Sleipnir, was a horse of Norse mythology who was believed to belong to Odin, the god of war, poetry, knowledge, and wisdom. The meaning of his name is actually "smooth" or "gliding," which is how the creature travels. He was born to Loki, the Norse trickster god, who had turned into a mare to lure away a stallion helping a demon. Sleipnir was given as a gift to Odin, and then to his son, Hemrod. Hemrod rode Sleipnir into Hell, and the horse cleared the gates easily. They were there because Hemrod's brother, Balder, had been killed mistakenly by their blind brother, Hodur.
The goddess of the underworld, Hel, refused to let Hemrod out of her lair when he found his brother. After an arguement with the boy, she decided she'd let him free on one condition: every one and every thing must weep for him. Everything did, except a giantress, who was Loki in disguise once more. Hemrod, Balder, and Sleipner were all trapped in the underworld. Only a few days after living in the wasteland, Sleipnir leapt off of a cliff in Hell, and when he crashed to the ground and died his legs sprang from his body, each evolving into a copy of sleipnir. They outsmarted Hel and escaped, though they couldn't rescue the brothers, and got to the surface. They reproduced, and gradually, the breed became more well-known in Equinopia. They took the name of their founder in his honor.

ooc; please note that i made up all of the story after the boys and Sleipner were trapped in the underworld; i added that so there is a reason why they're in equinopia now, and not extinct.
